LT-590 is a bifunctional organosilane possessing a reactive organic mercapto and a hydrolysable inorganic methoxysilyl group. The dual nature of its reactivity allows it to bind chemically to both inorganic materials (e.g. glass, metals, fillers) and organic polymers (e.g. thermoplastics, thermosets or elastomers) thus functioning as adhesion promoter, crosslinker agent, surface modifier or reactive reagent.
It is a clear, colorless liquid with a slightly mercaptan odor. It is soluble in alcohols, ketones and aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons.

In the presence of water, the methoxy groups of LT590 hydrolyze to form reactive silanol groups which can bond to a variety of inorganic substrates. The organophilic mercapto end of LT-590 can react with a suitable polymer. Hydrolysis of LT-590 is catalyzed by acids.
Examples of suitable inorganic substrates are glass, glass fibers, quartz, silicia, sand, cristobalite, mica kaolin, talc, other siliate fillers and metals.
Application and performance
KH-590 is used in applications such as:
² Glass composites: as a finish or a size ingredient.
² Glass and metal primer.
² Sealants and adhesives: as a primer, additive, or for chemical modification of the polymer.
² Mineral filled polymers: for pretreat- ment of fillers and pigments or as an additive.
Important product effects that can be achieved through the use of KH-590 include:
